Within three years, the Chamber Orchestra of Belgium has built up a strong reputation. In 2008, the Orchestra got off to a flying start at deSingel in Antwerp. Concerts then followed in places such as Charleroi, Mechelen, Sint-Truiden and Heerlen (NL). Under the Director of Music, Ben Haemhouts, the orchestra is focusing on the classical and early romantic period, as well as the standard repertoire for chamber orchestra music. The Orchestra also fully embraces contemporary works. For example, it recently cooperated with internationally-renowned Japanese composer Michiru Oshima and theatre maker Wayn Traub for the Festival of Flanders. Besides its ongoing cycle of concerts, the Chamber Orchestra of Belgium also has a social mission that consists of three pillars:
There are the Partnerships with Young Composers (Huis voor jonge componisten), in which talented Belgian composers are given the opportunity to write new work for chamber orchestras under the supervision of a renowned composer. The Partnerships with the Community (Huis van sociaal engagement) embrace the orchestra’s social duty to bring music to all layers of society via workshops for underprivileged groups. To this end, the orchestra works together with organisations such as the CPAS/OCMW (the Belgian Public Social Welfare Centre). Finally, with the Partnerships with Kids (Huis voor kinderen), the Chamber Orchestra of Belgium fulfils the mission it has given itself of bringing more children into contact with classical music.
